Scottish Club awards

Despite the current pandemic putting a stop to the 2020 show circuit, Shorthorn breeders across Scotland continued to show their passion and enthusiasm for the breed with 106 pedigree animals entered for the Scottish Shorthorn Club’s virtual show.

The Supreme Winner of the show, which was judged by renowned stockman, Rich Thomson, over six weeks on a series of short videos sent in by exhibitors, was awarded to Stuart G Mair & Sons seven-year-old stock bull, Alvie Galaxy.

Bred by Alvie Estates and purchased by the Mair family for their Muiresk herd in 2019, the well-known bull is no stranger to the show circuit having won Reserve Overall Shorthorn at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2014 and Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2014 and 2015.

With excellent genetics, this senior bull has bred show stoppers, with the Mairs, who established their herd of 20 breeding females in 2016, picking up junior male champion at 2019 Starts of the Future Show with Galaxy’s son, Muiresk Northern Dancer, who also stood Junior Champion and Reserve Overall Male in the virtual show.

The virtual show’s reserve overall, which also picked up the prize for best bred by exhibitor was John Scott and Partners 2018 born heifer, Fearn Monique M1669 with her heifer calf at foot, Fearn Monique P1782.

Boasting a great pedigree, this two-year-old heifer from Fearn’s 100 cow herd was recently classified VG88, the highest score Fearn has had for a two-year-old heifer to date.

One of many Moniques at Fearn, she goes back to Calrossie breeding on the maternal side and is sired by Fearn Jimmy one of the farm’s senior stock bulls who has an interesting blend of Australian and New Zealand bloodlines.

Commenting on the virtual show, Scottish Beef Shorthorn Club Secretary Rosemary Dickie said: “We were blown away by the amount of entries received for the virtual show. Members of the club were unanimous in their decision to support the event and looked forward to seeing the results shared on social media each week.

“It’s great to see the Scottish Beef Shorthorn Club thriving in these difficult times and the online show still gave breeders and enthusiasts the opportunity see stock, in particular yearling bulls and heifers, that will be on offer at the upcoming society sales.”
